Q1：p.3 右邊one fine night 及 one bright day 是否都是指天氣不錯的，因為 night 不能用bright 來形容，所以用fine 來形容天氣不錯的夜晚？

A：對的，而且它的形容詞互相對應，跟我們寫中文是一樣的

Q2：They thought it a pity to leave New York City. 這句意思是這樣嗎？ thought it （把它當作是）a pity（一件遺憾的事），為什麼沒有is
我覺得 應該是 They thought it is a pity to leave New York City.

A：我想兩種寫法都可以吧！但 is 是可以省略的
我經常看到類似的句子：
I thought it a pity that I had not had the opportunity to taste such interesting food before.
I've always thought it a pity that we don't have more of that tradition here.
It was such a lovely day, I thought it a pity to get up.

Q3：若我要表達 【我想這個人是個壞人】 這兩種都對嗎? I thought him a bad guy.

A：你能想出這句子，表示你真瞭解了

Q4：I thought he is a bad guy. （thought 後面要加that 嗎？）

A：that 可加，也可不加
這種情況發生在高級教材＜長夜漫漫路迢迢＞最多
作者的劇本沒有 that, 但演員偏偏加進去，害我改得半死
萬一有漏改的，也無妨，反正都是對的

Q5：紐約市的別稱 the Big Apple 為什麼 前面要加 the；但是New York City 前面不用加 the

A：the Big Apple, the Windy City 都要加 the，這是為這個地方另取個代號
城市都不加 the，如台北

Q6：p.4 左邊 got in the way 是不是"阻礙"的意思? 那附近幾句的意思，是不是這樣：

A：這是指特定地區，如 American Southwest　美國西南部，指Arizona, New Mexico

Q9：第6頁 右邊 In Vancouver, B.C. 其中 B.C. 是什麼意思？

A：British Columbia 英屬哥倫比亞；當地華僑稱〔卑詩省〕

Q10：to Canada for a treat 在這句中，是不是【去加拿大找樂子】的意思

A：對的。

Q11：第9頁 右邊 They came over a ridge and ran into the bridge.
他們爬升上山脊，開上了橋 came over和 ran into 是否都是 【偶然間碰到】的意思？

Q12：第10頁 左邊 he sent the nice folks on their way. 是不是【他送這些好人回家】?
A：他們肯定都是〔好人〕，但這裡翻譯成中文〔好人〕就有點怪 〔意思是這些人都是好旅伴，好相處〕

Q13：第10頁 右邊 but now I'm done.
意思是【但是我已經完成這件事了】

A：對的

Q14：第11頁 That was quiet a journey. quite 是不是【完全地】的意思

A：quite 很難翻譯
意思是這不只是一段旅程，而且是充滿新鮮事的旅程
整句意思很像： What a journey!

Q15：第15頁 Think of your machine as a contraption.【想像你的飛行機器是一個奇特的機器玩意兒】，是不是 等於 imagine sb/sth as sth
若要表達 【想像你自己是個詩人】是不是【Think of yourself as a poet.】

A：對的，相當於 imagine yourself as a poet

Q16：在第10頁的左邊 Clarence Macbean flew the flying machine to Nebraska the very next day. the very next day 為什麼沒有介係詞，在 老虎 第9頁裡面 on that very afternoon 有介係詞

A：in the afternoon
on that afternoon
the next day
這都是習慣用語，我覺得背也背不來，只能多聽多看吧
海明威有篇小說＜午後之死＞（Death in the afternoon）
電視影集＜慾望城市＞女主角總是說：The next day

Q17：第2頁 左 when the people got in to go for a spin, it barely got up in the air.
經查字典spin 雖有 旋轉的意思，但 go for a spin 是 去兜風的意思
例句 Let's go for a spin in my new car. 坐我的新車去兜一圈吧
我覺得 "兜風" 很適用於這裡的語意，老師是這樣嗎？

A：應該是　Let's go for a spin with my new car.

Q18：在flying machine中： the weather is nippy，nippy查字典的意思為辛辣的，刺骨的，但用來形容天氣好像不太恰當，不知中文要如何翻譯才好？

A：nippy ：冷得刺骨

Q19：文中有一段：'Your company is fine, but it's the end of the line.'
And he sent the nice folks on their way.老實說，這三句並不難聽，但是倒底是何意呢？

A：company ：同伴、朋友
電影或電視影集裡常會出現：You got company.（有人來了）
電影＜天才雷普利＞，凱特布蘭琪是富家千金，無論走到哪兒都有人陪伴著
所以她很無奈地跟麥特戴蒙說：Co. Lots of co.
folks 在這裡是〔這些人〕
it's the end of the line：〔已到行程終點〕
he sent the nice folks on their way：〔他送這群 nice people 上路〕

Q20：The flying machine文中： when the people got in to go for a spin, IT BARELY GOT UP IN THE AIR
最後一句意思是：它幾乎飛不上天空， 試問，這算是個FLYING MACHINE嗎？不太懂呢！

A：妳的理解是對的
因為這可能是他自己製造的
機能有限，當人坐上去，差點飛不上去

Q21：He trundled off home to his bed.

A：翻譯：他慢慢走回家去，上床睡覺。
trundle 慢步走的意思，off 有行動之意，如 Off we go!

Q22：They thought it was grand till they wanted to land, and the Capitol go in the way. 意思是不是說他看到的那個CAPITOL的建築很堂皇,於是他想降落,而那個建築在路中央? got in the way 是不是代表東西佇立在中央的意思?

A：理解力是整體的
They thought it was grand 指的是上一句敘述的事
他們覺得那很棒

Q23：還有 On a South Sea island hop 是什麼意思? 跳到南海島嗎??
